“I hope to draw support from the tools of conceptual art to construct a contradictory circumstance, thereby changing the intrinsic knowledge of life and construct a more abstract and unfamiliar artistic perception.”
–Zhou Xiaohu
Zhou Xiaohu was born in Changzhou, China in 1960 and is a graduate of the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts. He currently lives and works in Shanghai. Zhou Xiaohu is China’s pioneering video animation artist, and since 1997, he began to use computers in the creation of his artwork and began experimentation with stop-motion animation, video installation and other forms of creation. His trademark style is the use of varying image layers between filmed and real figures. Zhou Xiaohu’s creative freedom transcends many forms of media, dealing with animation, video, installation, oil painting and comprehensive action pieces, and most recently incorporating traditional marionette performance as well, gradually moving towards the idea of art as a ‘theater of energies.” His art reflects how in a digital age, the specific details of history can be enlarged or misread, and how distorted and omitted events can be best recorded.
