Artist Guo Fengyi will be participating in a two-person exhibition “Lucy & Fengyi” at Pond Society, with five of her works including Four Diagrams of the Divination Procedures in Zhu Xi’s The Basics of I Chin (1990), 60 Diagram (1990), and Luotu (1996). The show marks the first time Bull and Guo have been shown together, and illuminates formal, material, and cross-cultural correspondences between artists who hail from different generations and different parts of the globe. Because their pictures emerge from transpersonal ideas about—and experiences of—internal and external perception, the distances that separate their ages and their countries of origin are in fact smaller than they might seem; indeed, the art of Bull and Guo alike draws from direct sensory participation in the living present, and posits that artmaking emerges as a response to constantly shifting inner and outer realities.

Guo Fengyi (b. 1942, Xi’an, China; d. 2010) stepped into the contemporary art world with The Long March—A Walking Visual Display (2002), where she produced site-specific works in the Yunnan Province in China with American artist Judy Chicago. Her works have since been exhibited at the 2005 Biennale of Contemporary Art, Prague, Czech Republic; 2005 Yokohama Triennial, Yokohama, Japan; 2006 Taipei Biennale, Taipei, Taiwan; and 2010 Gwangju Biennale, Korea. Her works have appeared in solo exhibitions at Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, New Plymouth, New Zealand (2009) and Contemporary Art Gallery (CAG), Vancouver, Canada (2012). In 2013 she was one of two Chinese artists featured in Massimiliano Gioni’s The Encyclopedic Palace at the Venice Biennale, Italy. In the same year, her works were featured in Alternative Guide to the Universe, Hayward Gallery, London, and at Carnegie International, Pittsburgh. In 2020, The Drawing Center presented Guo’s first major New York institutional show, and later the exhibition traveled to SCAD Museum of Art, Savannah. In 2021, Guo’s works were presented at “Phase 3: An Exhibition” of the 13th Shanghai Biennale “Bodies of Water”.
